Q: Can a WOLMAN product be applied over another coating?

A: No. WOLMAN coatings are penetrating finishes and need to be absorbed into the wood to be effective. If another coating is on the wood, the WOLMAN product will only sit on the top surface. This can cause such problems as coating residue tracking onto carpets or rubbing off onto clothing. Previous coatings must be removed with appropriate strippers or cleaners before a new coating of WOLMAN product is applied. To determine if a deck or other project surface is ready to absorb a new finish, refer to any WOLMAN water repellent or stain Product Technical Data Sheet or our Tip Sheet for information on Surface Preparation, and how to perform a Splash Test.
