Q: What is the difference between a transparent, semi-transparent and solid stain?

A: Like paint, stains are usually classified “semi-transparent” or “solid” to describe their level of clarity. For instance, semi-transparent stains allow the natural grain and texture to show through the coating, whereas solid colored stains are more opaque, covering up most or all of the grain and texture. WOLMAN also makes finish coatings that are very transparent in color, for those homeowners who want to show off the beauty of their wood while still providing enough pigment to give UV protection. Choose RainCoat® Water Repellent With Toner or F&P® Wood Finish and Preservative if you want a transparent look, and WOLMAN Deck Stain or EXTREME® Acrylic Wood Finish if you’re interested in a semi-transparent or solid hide look.
