| Q: Is it better to use a penetrating oil finish or a film-forming product? | | A: A penetrating oil finish is more readily absorbed into wood than a film-former, and carries water repellent, mildewcide, preservative and pigment deeper into the wood substrate. A film-forming, water-base coating will adhere to the top surface of the wood, and act as an impenetrable barrier to protect the wood below. Film-formers also offer the advantage of encapsulating rough, uneven, splinter-laden surface areas, protecting against skin contact.
In general, a film-forming finish offers performance advantages ideal for vertical surfaces, while a penetrating finish’s advantages are ideally suited for horizontal surfaces, which are more vulnerable to water and UV damage due to direct exposure.
